About Us
The Coogee Buddhist Centre is part of a worldwide movement: The Triratna Buddhist Community. Triratna draws on the entire Buddhist tradition and expresses itself in a fresh and dynamic way. We have been offering courses in Buddhism and meditation for more than 40 years. Our teachers are practising Buddhists who strive to incorporate the ideals of Buddhism into daily life.
We offer courses in Buddhism and meditation in a friendly, supportive environment. Our meditation techniques can be used by anyone regardless of religious beliefs. Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. Buddhist meditation practices are techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity and a calm seeing of the true nature of things. By engaging in meditation you learn the patterns and habits of your mind, and the practice offers a means to cultivate new, more creative ways of being. With regular work and practice these nourishing, focused states can deepen into a profoundly peaceful and energised mind.
We also operate Vijayaloka Retreat Centre, in Minto, conveniently located less than one hour from the heart of Sydney. It provides simple shared accommodation for approximately 40 people in a beautiful bush setting on the George's River. We run retreats here for all levels of experience where you can take a break and learn about meditation, Buddhism and yourself in a relaxed bushland setting.
Meditation is one of the most direct ways to cultivate a clear, happy and free mind.
Weekly sessions are offered to anyone interested in learning and or deepening meditation practice. We provide a space for people to grow and develop, becoming calmer and more aware in the midst of urban life.
A $15 donation (or $10 concession) is suggested to help us cover costs and to make what we offer available to more people. No-one receives any renumeration.
Our Values
Acknowledgement of Country
With respect we acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we practice: the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation at Sydney Buddhist Centre, and the Tharawal people at Vijayaloka Retreat Centre.
We offer our gratitude to the ancestors and to all who have cared for these lands. We pay our respects to Gadigal and Tharawal descendants and support their spiritual aspirations for the future. May we seek to understand and live in harmony with each other, and with this ancient land and all its beings.
